Beta testing “Walking Melbourne” podcast

Last month I recorded a couple of pilot episodes of a new podcast series where I walk around Melbourne with one of the City of Melbourne’s “greeters”, Jill. This is a project cooked up between myself, Tourism Victoria and the City of Melbourne. We’ve recorded two pilots and I’d really appreciate it if a few of you in Melbourne would grab these and do the walk while you listen to the podcast and then give me feedback on how well it works.

The way I’ve edited it, I have deliberately left in the “walk time” between locations and just filled it with some jazz. I’m hoping this prevents people from having to constantly pause the recording. However, if this doesn’t work, let me know.

The two tours are as follows:

Politics, Prostitutes and Poverty

This tour starts at Parliament House on the corner of Spring Street and Collins Street and takes about 80 minutes. You can obviously rest as often as you like by pausing the show and starting it again when you are ready. This tour takes us through the seedy history of Melbourne’s prostitution dens and criminal districts from the 19th century.

Lingering in Laneways

The second tour, “Lingering in Laneways”, starts at Federation Square and also takes about 90 minutes. This tour takes us through some of the laneways of Melbourne that you probably won’t read about in a tourist brochure. Discover hidden bars, shops, restaurants and other Melbourne delights you never knew existed.

Any chance of an “short” walk - say a lunch time 45 minute one !?

I’m interesting in trying these out - but would have to do each of them in 2 (or 3) attempts…

  2. Michaela Says:

Would love to do this Cam, but I am not able to beta test. CNS condition in feet. I would be happy to listen to the stuff about the places if I’ve been there if that would help?

  3. Cameron Says:

Colin - interesting idea. I guess they probably do have 45 min walks, I’ll ask.

Mickey - thanks mate, I mostly need ppl to test the walkability of it, so no problems!

Have they thought of doing one to maybe accompany the Historic Tram that does the rounds of the city?
    Just a thought.
Also (with having looked/listened to them and being a little more biased now I own an iPod) have they considered doing an AAC enhanced version that might have a map image or Photos or something as it goes a long the way? Also having chapters would allow you to jump around if you didn’t want to listen to the jazz (or at least thats my understanding of Enhanced AAC, I haven’t actually had the chance to try one yet).

Also, I have thought for sometime that coming up with some sort of kiosk method of sharing the file would be great. I.E. At the start of the tour, have a PC that has some sort of connector you doc your iPod and it some how syncs to it. I am sure this is doable. Same with phones and other MP3 devices (not that its popular here, but I reackon this could be a killer app for the Zune and its wireless sharing option. This case is one, but imagine walking past the movies and being offered for it to give you trailers of the latest movies or movie podcast with reviews of movies, etc).

    Just a thought.
